Abstract
The patients were randomly selected in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Yonsei University College of medicine for studies on cardiothoracic ratio changes during prenatal and postpartum status from January 1st, 1971 to December 31, 1971. The chest X-ray (P-A) were taken in the 465 prenatal cases, 60 cases on the first and 3rd day postpartum and 30 cases at 6 weeks postpartum plus 20 cases of postpartum cardiac failure cases. The results are as follows : 1) As the diaphragm is progressively elevated during pregnancy, Y=0.002X+0.421 of the regression line were noted, which is in proportion to the height of the fundus. After delivery the hight of diaphragm progressively decreased and the cardiothoracic ratio also decreased. Also the cardiothoracic ratio of the PPD#1, 3 and 6 weeks was similar to the ratio at term, 32 weeks gestation and 18 weeks gestation respectively. 2) In the 20 cases of postpartum heart failure the cardiothoracic ratio was 0.61 which is much more than the normal value. 3) In addition to the cardiothoracic ratio of normal pregnancy, the ratio of the complicated pregnancies, such as pre-eclampsia and multiple pregnancy should be studied further.
